Is Asbestos the “Wonder Material”?

Asbestos has been called “Wonder Material” for its many valuable qualities.  It is incredibly resilient to heat, and is a great insulator.  Asbestos has been used in insulation, brake pads, coatings and finishes. However, when exposed long-term via inhalation or ingestion, it can cause numerous health-related problems, which don’t present themselves until years down the road.

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has many regulations in place for dealing with asbestos handling and disposal.  Although the EPA effectively banned the use of asbestos in products way back in 1989, it’s still available today in some products on store shelves.  China, India and Russia are still producing asbestos.  Up until the end of 2018, our neighbor to the north, Canada, was still using asbestos in the manufacturing of certain products.  So when we travel to the building supply store to purchase certain items, like drywall compound, it’s possible that we’re potentially being introduced to asbestos.

As part of our business, American Integrity Restoration, performs lots of demolition, removal and cleaning of damaged building materials.  As a course of action to ensure we’re compliant with the EPA, the CT Dept of Public Health (DPH) and Occupational Safety & Health Administration (OSHA), we are testing building materials when it’s possible we could disturb greater than 3 square feet of asbestos.  Many other companies are not taking the same precautions to protect their employees, their customers, and also to comply with the regulations.  AIR has chosen to take the lead on compliance, to ensure a positive outcome.  More often than not, test samples reveal that no asbestos is present.  That said, NOT testing at all is a risk that none of us should be willing to take.

Future articles will discuss what happens when we find asbestos. #airprepared

HOME FOR THE HOLIDAYS

American Integrity Restoration and The Hartford's insurance adjuster David Moses made sure that a Sandy Hook family is back in their home for the holidays. They moved back in today, December 10th, after being displaced by the May 15, 2018 tornado that hit their town. Special thank you to AIR's project manager Mike Pacelia, estimator TJ Ford, Ray Brown and all of the AIR employees!  With the help of Tammy Villa from Home Depot who generously donated a tree, lights and ornaments, and AIR who donated some Visa gift cards, hopefully this family will have a very merry Christmas!

Annual Applefest 5k Charity Run

Glastonbury, CT.     For the 8th year in a row, American Integrity Restoration's Team Hot AIR is "Running for a Reason."  Each year while supporting the CT River Valley Chamber of Commerce at the Applefest 5K, AIR selects a family within the surrounding community who is dealing with health issue or financial crisis. AIR donates $10 per runner on Team Hot AIR and collect donations for our sponsored family. After an amazing turnout last year of 300 runners, this year we are running in honor of Kyle Ashley. Kyle is a second grade student from Colchester, bravely battling osteosarcoma, a form of cancer.

Kyle was diagnosed with osteosarcoma in November of 2017, and immediately started chemotherapy, followed by an above the knee amputation on March 1, 2018.  After completing chemo at the end of July, Kyle and his family were making plans for the start of his 2nd grade year and for Mom, Marci, to go back to work as a teacher in Hartford Public Schools. However, after his routine scans, the doctors discovered the spread of cancer in his lungs.  He has just begun a more intense chemo regimen and will also be undergoing lung surgeries to remove the nodules. We are hoping that this run lets him know that there are people who are cheering him on!

We feel that when a family is dealing with a debilitating and/or possibly terminal diagnosis their lives should not also be shattered financially. Every little bit counts!

Please consider joining Team Hot AIR on Sunday October 14, 2018 to help ease a financial burden and also raise Kyle and his family's spirits by running/walking in Kyle's honor.

To register please visit the Connecticut River Valley Chamber of Commerce website to register:

https://www.crvchamber.org/apple-harvest-festival or go to the 5K registration page:   http://angryorchardappleharvestfestival5k.itsyourrace.com/event.aspx?id=7555.

Please be sure to register for Kyle's team (Team Hot AIR).  If you have any questions, please email Allegra Weir at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..  All runners will receive a Team Hot AIR t-shirt the morning of the race and if you are registered in advance you also receive the Applefest 5K swag from the Connecticut River Valley Chamber of Commerce.

In lieu of running, donations for Kyle and his family can be made out to Marci Ashley and mailed to American Integrity Restoration c/o Allegra Weir, 60 Village Place Glastonbury, CT 06033.

This event is near and dear to the AIR family, and they hope to continue to have the event grow and benefit the surrounding community they serve.
